Finding Good Books (updated 6/2010)    

If you have an idea of the kind of book you'd like to read but aren't sure of titles or authors, these Internet sites can help you find just what you're looking for.  To access the sites, click on the web addresses listed below:

Connecticut Digital Library - ( IConn)If you have a library card, you can access a broad spectrum of databases in this system, including one that will help you select books to read.  Click on Access from Home and type in your library barcode number.  On the next screen, choose "What Do I Read Next?" under Reading.  You can search by title, author, genre, character, topic, setting and more.  You can even design your own custom search for just the right combination of factors.

Whichbook.net- This site includes an excellent tutorial with step-by-step instructions on how to specify exactly what you want in a book.

Bookslut - Don't be put off by the name of this site.  Recommended by the public library division of the American Library Association, it provides stimulating book reviews and commentary on literary topics.

Stop, You're Killing Me!-Visit this site for lists of titles by your favorite author and many more resources, such as a character index and lists of award winners and "read-alikes" to help you find books similar to those you've enjoyed.    

Fantastic Fiction- information on over 350,000 books. Search by title or author. Great resource for finding books in a series in the correct order.

Readers Advice - book lists for 9000+ fiction authors in 460 subgenres

The Cozy Library - book lists, reviews, author profiles and lots more (cozy = books chocked-full of kind-hearted characters, no explicit sex or violence and a generally happy ending)

Reading Group Guides - contains discussion questions for more than 2,000 books and great resources for book clubs.

Book Clubs Resource.com - tips on running a book club, reading group guides and other resources for book clubs.  Includes a section on online book clubs.

Readers' Circle - looking for a local book club to join? - find it on this site.

LibraryThing - catalog your home library and see what others are reading.  Connect with others who read the same things.

SciFan - books and links for the science fiction fan.  Incredible database of science fiction and fantasy titles, authors, series, and themes.
 
Christian Fiction Finder - for readers of inspirational fiction - a database of Christian fiction titles and authors.

Book Spot - portal site for hundreds of book-related web sites.

Gnooks - fun site that helps to find reading suggestions and similar authors.

Library Booklists - more book lists, more categories, more links than you can imagine - this is the place to go to find a book to read.

Overbooked - reviews, links and lists galore, including lists of books that have received 'starred' reviews!

Writers As Readers - book reviews written by authors.
